Change Your Ideas About What Is Normal

What is normal for us today is likely far different than what we considered normal a few years ago. Sometimes it seems that our idea of what’s normal is skewed by current events, by emotional upset, financial losses, or other people’s criticism and recommendations. Could it be that we unconsciously sabotage our efforts at success by clinging to outmoded and unreliable beliefs? Are we stuck in the past and unwilling to recognize that we have changed? More to the point, are we hampered by such iron-clad beliefs that we aren’t able to take advantage of opportunities that present themselves to us now?

Everyone likes to think that they’ll achieve success in one endeavor or another. If we find something worthwhile, we’re much more willing to exert whatever effort is required, for as long as it is necessary, in order to be successful at it.

Sometimes, however, we get bogged down in the everyday, the trivial, the superficial and the conflicting demands on our time. We can’t see beyond the mess and chaos we’re in to something more profound and meaningful. We might even begin to believe that we don’t deserve to exist on a higher plane, that this type of living doesn’t apply to us or that we can never achieve it.

Nothing could be further from the truth. What is required in order to elevate our thoughts and attain a different perspective is to change our ideas about what is normal. If we see life as dreary, hopeless, filled with pain and sorrow, and that is what we consider normal, where is our outlook going to be? It will be one of deprivation, shame, guilt and failure. Changing our way of looking at what a normal life to us is like can undo all that, create a tremendous sense of renewed enthusiasm and vigor, allow for the opening up of horizons, the possibilities inherent in opportunities that come our way.

Consider that there are always two ways of looking at things: positive and negative. If we see our normal as bad, changing our vision to one that’s positive is liberating and empowering. It is something that we alone can do. No one else can do it for us. There’s also a great sense of pride in taking responsibility for our choice to change what we see as normal. Creating a new normal, one that is powerful and freeing and stimulating and challenging is what living life with purpose is all about.

It doesn’t hurt. It doesn’t cost a dime. It doesn’t take all that much time. Shouldn’t this be considered as an approach worth taking – if we’re truly serious about making the most of our lives?
