Acamprosate is a generic medication used to treat individuals suffering from alcohol withdrawal. While researchers are still trying to understand how it works, it appears that the medication reduces cravings by stabilizing the brain’s chemical balance during the withdrawal process. It may also reduce anxiety and sleep issues caused by alcohol withdrawal.
In combination with a support group, and abstinence from alcohol or drug use, it can be a useful tool for breaking free of addiction. Acamprosate doesn’t prevent withdrawal symptoms, and hasn’t been shown to work in people who haven’t stopped drinking or who are actively abusing other drugs.
Acamprosate is not a controlled substance and therefore is not viewed as presenting a risk for abuse or addiction.
