Addiction medicine is a medical specialty for doctors who treat people addicted to drugs, alcohol and other substances. Internet addiction, sexual addictions and others that do not involve the use of physical substances are not recognized as part of addiction medicine, with the exception of gambling, which is classified as a pathological illness. Chemical addictions are defined as chronic, progressive diseases characterized by impulse-control disorders. Physicians who specialize in the treatment of these conditions are therefore Doctors of Addiction Medicine. The American Medical Association (AMA) recognizes addiction medicine as a medical specialty, however, Addiction Medicine is not yet recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.
