Anxiety disorder

Anxiety DisorderAn estimated to 40 million Americans have an anxiety disorders. Many people with anxiety disorders may also suffer from other problems such as depression, substance abuse and eating disorders. There is some evidence that anxiety disorders have a genetic basis, and clinicians treat them with medication and/or psychotherapy. The American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) identifies 12 anxiety disorders which include:

  • Separation Anxiety Disorder
  • Selective Mutism
  • Specific Phobias
  • Social Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia)
  • Panic Disorder
  • Panic Attack Specifier
  • Agoraphobia
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder
  • Substance/Medication-Induced Anxiety Disorder
  • Anxiety Disorder Due to Another Medical Condition
  • Other Specified Anxiety Disorder
  • Unspecified Anxiety Disorder
