Addiction A-Z

Avoidant personality disorder

This mental health condition affects roughly one percent of the U.S. population and is characterized by a lifelong pattern of feeling very shy, inadequate and sensitive to rejection. While the cause of avoidant personality disorder is unknown, genes or a physical illness that changes the person’s appearance may play a role. Individuals with this disorder can’t stop thinking about their own shortcomings and fear loss and rejection. Talk therapy is considered the most effective treatment and antidepressant drugs may also be used.
