Narcissistic personality disorder

Narcissistic personality disorder is characterized by an excessive sense of self-importance, an extreme preoccupation with oneself and a lack of empathy for others. While the cause is unknown, early life experiences such as insensitive parenting are thought to play a role. A person with narcissistic personality disorder may display rage, shame or humiliation when criticized, take advantage of others to achieve his or her own goals and be preoccupied with fantasies of success, power or beauty. Talk therapy is often used to help the affected person relate to other people more positively and compassionately.
