Addiction A-Z

Side effects

Side effects are the consequences of ingesting a certain substance that are in addition to what the substance is primarily intended for. Although side effects can be good or bad, we most commonly hear about them when they are unusually detrimental or when the benefit gained by taking the substance is outweighed by the negative side effect. Side effects can also vary according to how long a patient has taken the drug or how predisposed the patient is to a particular complication. The most common side effects occur with the ingestion of prescription drugs, illicit drugs and alcohol.
