Addiction A-Z

Stimulants

Stimulants, or “uppers,” are chemicals ingested for their ability to improve energy and alertness, elevate mood, and instill feelings of wellbeing. Although some stimulants like caffeine and nicotine are available over the counter, the more potent varieties, like cocaine and methamphetamine, are not. The two most common stimulant drugs used today can be found in coffee and cigarettes. Stimulants are also found in prescription drug form and, when used as directed for attention deficit and obesity, can be safe and effective. Some of the more popular examples include Ritalin and Adderall.
