Stress management

Stress occurs when the demands placed on a person exceed the personality or emotional resources he or she has available to satisfy the demands. Successfully counteracting the effects of stress can have a significant impact on physical health, emotional health and quality of life. Stress management techniques include relaxation training, daily exercise, getting adequate sleep, avoiding alcohol, adhering to a balanced diet, prayer, meditation, yoga and deep breathing. People who regularly practice these techniques, even in the absence of stress, report a less-intense response to stress than people who deploy the techniques only after the stressor has arisen.
