Addiction A-Z

Abstinence acceptance

Abstinence acceptance is the process by which an addict or alcoholic accepts the idea that they cannot moderate their usage of drugs or alcohol and must abstain completely from the use of substances to maintain sobriety.

In the disease model of addiction the belief is that the chronic nature of alcoholism and addiction make them similar to diabetes and other chronic diseases in that after time passes you cannot consider yourself safe to “use” again. Just as the diabetic can not decide to disregard diet and nutrition without expecting serious health problems, the alcoholic or addict cannot expect to use alcohol or drugs without serious consequences, no matter how much time has passed since the last time they drank or used drugs.
