Addiction A-Z

Antabuse (disulfiram)

Antabuse is the brand name of disulfiram, a medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of chronic alcoholism. The alcohol antagonist drug causes unpleasant side effects even with a small amount of alcohol consumed. These side effects include nausea, vomiting, flushing of the face, sweating, confusion, blurred vision, chest pain, weakness, breathing difficulty and anxiety. Antabuse is not a cure for alcoholism but has been shown to discourage alcoholics from drinking.
