Freebasing is a term that refers to the act of smoking drugs, such as heroin or cocaine. With cocaine, freebasing involves the conversion of cocaine hydrochloride into cocaine sulfate that is nearly 100 percent pure, free of additives. Smoking involves inhaling the drug’s smoke or vapor into the lungs, where absorption into the bloodstream is as rapid as by injection. According to the National Institutes of Health, this immediate euphoric effect is one of the reasons crack cocaine became so popular in the mid-1980s. Repetitive freebasing increases a person’s risk of addiction and death from overdose.
