Believe You Are Valuable And Worthwhile

“You are always a valuable, worthwhile human being – not because anybody says so, not because you’re successful, not because you make a lot of money – but because you decide to believe it and for no other reason.” – Wayne Dyer, American self-help author and motivational speaker (1940-2015)

Beaten, downtrodden, feeling like a failure and finding no hope in the future – these are the harsh realities that we sometimes face. No one, however, is more critical than we are of ourselves. Herein lies the truth: We can reverse such negative feelings – if we choose to do so.

Just because others say we’re no good, can’t do anything right, are worthless and without value doesn’t make it so. By the same token, what others say about our successes, whether to our face or to someone else, while it’s comforting to hear and learn about, also doesn’t reflect on our own innate value and self-worth. What does is how we regard ourselves.

Each human being has value and worth. It’s up to each of us to find those qualities within us and maximize their potential. Self-worth and value are like seeds that require certain conditions in order to grow and thrive. Without proper care, seeds wither and die, although they may lay dormant for some time waiting for the right conditions to appear again. In the same manner our self-worth and value wait to be cultivated, nurtured, acknowledged and embraced.

It’s also worth remembering that no one else can do this for us. We can bask in praise others give us – and this is an indication that we’re doing something good and right – but words others say don’t change who we are and what we’re capable of. Only we can do that.

Can someone with little or no money, few or nonexistent friends, meager possessions, a frail and diseased body, a history of seeming failures have value and worth? By societal standards, perhaps not. But by the unique and indomitable presence of our will and determination, not to mention our God-given (or Higher Power-given) gifts, we all have such value and worth. It doesn’t matter if we’re rich or poor, educated or not, what occupation we pursue, how young or old we are. Who we support politically doesn’t matter with respect to our value and worth and neither does our stature in the community, how well-known we are, whether we’re revered or reviled by others.

Believe you have value and worth. Tell yourself this every day, if that’s what it takes to change your mindset. By believing you are valuable and worthwhile, you increase your value and worth – to yourself, and that’s what matters.
