Consumer-Run (Peer-Support) Services

Peer support services are delivered by individuals who have common life experiences with the people they are serving, such as mental and/or substance use disorders. In addition to these problems, peer support has yielded productive outcomes in other areas such as parenting, loss and bereavement, cancer and chronic illnesses. Shared experiences enable a deep understanding and unique capacity to help others. By offering emotional support, strength and hope – peers enable personal growth, promote emotional wellness and encourage recovery. Peers also provide assistance promoting a sense of belonging within the community. Starting in 2001, services provided in peer support programs qualified for Medicaid reimbursement. While peer support services for mental illness and substance abuse vary, most include:

– Emotional support: Demonstrates empathy, caring or concern to bolster a person’s self-esteem and confidence.
– Peer mentoring or coaching: Develops a one-on-one relationship in which a peer leader who has personally experienced recovery encourages, motivates and supports a peer in recovery.
– Peer resource linking: Connects a peer with professional and nonprofessional services and available community resources.
– Recovery group facilitation: Leads or facilitates recovery-oriented group activities including support groups and educational activities.
– Building community: Helps peers make new friends and build healthy social networks through emotional, instrumental, informational and affiliation types of peer support.

The Role of a Certified Peer Specialist

A certified peer specialist helps clients regain balance and control of their lives and provides support for recovery. While national organizations offer guidelines delineating best practices, most specialists are trained and certified at the state level. A key differentiation between a certified peer specialist role and other mental health positions is that in addition to traditional knowledge and competencies, the specialist operates from shared experiences and experiential firsthand knowledge of a specific problem (e.g. substance abuse).

The Efficacy of Peer Support Programs

Studies indicate information provided by peers is often seen as more credible than that provided by mental health professionals. Research also shows peer support facilitates recovery and reduces healthcare costs. Peer support services can fill a long-recognized gap in providing support recovery after an individual leaves a treatment program. In addition, peer support programs can provide vital links between mental illness and substance abuse treatment facilities and the larger communities in which people live and seek to achieve and sustain recovery.
